Karen Mitchell
Thursday, March 7 was an ordinary day in Mrs. Mitchell’s Kindergarten-2nd grade entrepreneurship classroom at Brookwood Elementary. That day she happened to be teaching first graders about earning, saving, spending and donating money. After she explained the vocabulary words and gave a quick lesson, she challenged the students to complete an exercise entitled, “Why Save?” The children were asked to brainstorm three things they could save their money for, select the one that they desired most, and fill in the blanks, “I will save my money for _____ because _____.”
As Mrs. Mitchell circulated around the classroom she smiled as she noticed that all of the students understood the concept and were listing things they could save their money for, such as, a Lego set, an iPad, a bike or even a ticket to Disney World. However, when Mrs. Mitchell reached one table, she had to bow down beside Yunzhu Liu for an explanation as she read his sentence, “I will save my money for a tooth replace because I want to add a tooth to my grandma.” When asked by his teacher why his grandmother needed her tooth replaced, he told her that his grandmother had not been able to go to the dentist in a long time and she needed another tooth so she could eat better. Mrs. Mitchell squeezed him tight and with a lump in her throat bragged on him for his selflessness and love. Remarkably, amidst the praise, he acted as if what he had written was simply a logical idea. It was at that moment that she realized that although all of her students understood the strategy of saving, this little one understood something much deeper, the concept of compassion.
Mrs. Mitchell believes that although many would say they teach to change a child’s life, oftentimes we are called to teach in order to have our own lives changed. March 7 was one of those days for her. She snapped a quick photo of the little boy’s paper and dismissed the class. That evening, she could not get the boy’s drawing out of her head or heart. His love called for a response. Mrs. Mitchell removed the student’s name from his work and decided to post a picture of it on the Brookwood Community Forum Facebook page hoping that someone with a heart as big as his would respond. Immediately, Dr. Son Van Nguyen and his wife Anh Ha graciously reached out to Mrs. Mitchell privately and said they would love to help the young boy’s request become a reality! The family owns a dental practice in Stone Mountain and their son is a third grade student at Brookwood Elementary. He is also a former entrepreneurship student of Mrs. Mitchell. Dr. Nguyen and his wife generously offered to assess the grandmother’s needs and help improve her dental health. Before knowing the need had been met, many others on the Facebook Forum offered to assist in locating a dental provider or to even donate money towards the noble cause. Mrs. Mitchell said, “I am in awe at the amount of attention and response this request received. Although, I should not be surprised because we live in a wonderfully generous community.” The motto of Snellville, “where everybody is proud to be somebody,” rings true in this story. May we all be encouraged by this selfless boy’s love for others and this dental practice’s desire to value a person over profit.
Mrs. Mitchell cannot wait to share this story with her students as it’s the perfect picture of the true definition of donating. One of the many economic standards that Mrs. Mitchell is required to teach her first grade entrepreneurship students is “to describe the costs and benefits of personal spending and saving choices.” However, Mrs. Mitchell said that more than standards, she simply longs to teach her students that compassion will always be more important than curriculum or even a future career. Compassion cannot be taught before it is experienced. Thanks to the example of this selfless six year old boy and this generous dentist, one grandmother’s smile will soon be making Snellville shine a little brighter. Leading by love always wins.
