Review of Indiana University School of Dentistry

Indiana University School of Dentistry is a dental school located in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a part of Indiana University, the school offers dental services to the community while also providing education to dental students. The school is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and closed on weekends.

The school provides a range of dental services, including cleanings, fillings, root canals, and extractions. The services are performed by dental students under the supervision of licensed dentists. Patients can expect to receive quality dental care at a fraction of the cost of private practice. The school also offers a flexible payment plan for those who need it.

While the school has received mixed reviews from patients, many have praised the professionalism and kindness of the staff. Some patients have reported longer wait times and occasional miscommunications, but overall, the school provides quality dental care at an affordable price.

It is important to note that as a dental school, the services provided may take longer than a typical dental visit. Patients should expect to spend around 2.5 hours for each appointment. Additionally, the school does not offer dental services for children under the age of 12.

If you are looking for affordable dental care and are willing to spend a little extra time for your appointments, Indiana University School of Dentistry may be a great option for you.

I can't tell you how great the IU School of Dentistry is. From the moment you arrive and check in to all the front line staff, doctors and trained assistants, you are in incredibly capable, comforting and genuinely friendly hands. The School at graduate levels only accepts a very tiny number of qualified applicants and the amount of skill they demonstrate is truly exceptional The facilities are state-of-the-art, perhaps better than most private dental practices that don't benefit from a University's billion dollar endowments, and people here are passionate and interested in you and your welfare. I was treated by Dr. Everhart, who came into the room with 6 years of general dentistry under his belt before setting off to become an endodontist. I could not have encountered a more kind, technically gentle and capable MD He treated a problematic tooth, nurturing it patiently to health with compassion, skill, professionalism and genuine engagement. I will always be grateful for the IU School of Dentistry and the miracle of intersecting with Dr. Everhart and his staff.

I call B.S. ON THESE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! dental students are AWESOME. I had severe tooth damage from car wreck and I have been in multiple times and already set up for 5 more apts. People saying it takes forever to get in or go get work done are lying. I got in within 2 weeks of initial consult and dental student has me in every week back to back. SHAME ON ALL WHO HAVE RATED THIS A NEGATIVE!

IUSD is a great place to receive dental care. The students may take longer than private practice because they are learning, but they are being trained and supervised by some of the best dentists in the country. They have a brand new clinical building with the latest technology that opened this year. Everyone that I've worked with has been helpful and kind.

School of Dentistry made a diagnoses for me that I had been searching for for years. Dr.Adams made the surgery that I needed possible and affordable! I cannot even put in to words how thankful I am for him and the school of dentistry. Thankyou to everyone involved with the school!

Indianapolis has been nothing but trouble as far as my dental issues go. I left a post on IU Health Methodist that connects to this one, since my trouble started here. I will second a few things that other people have mentioned. I went to the Dental Faculty practice since I work for the University and had heard much about how awesome it was. My personal experience in Dealing with the Dental Faculty Practice has been that the actual dentist do treat me as if I was mentally incompetent AND some form of drug seeker. On the first visit, for a cleaning, the actual Dentist was called in to diagnose a potential cavity. This was an older gentleman, who never even directly addressed me. In fact, he went of his way to talk about me in third person with the dental hygienist, and was not able to even properly bring up the X-rays that she had just taken. I came for a second visit with another dentist when I noticed what I thought was an abscess forming. This one had slightly better patient interaction, but was very clearly uncomfortable, and spoke down to me about my "so called abscess." Quickly diagnosed it as a chancre sore and told me it would heal up quickly on its on. I had to schedule a third visit to come see the oral pathologist, who frankly seemed generally disinterested. These past two months have been repeated terrible patient experiences in dealing with dental care issues. I haven't even gotten into the more serious issues I have had with the Oral Surgery of IU Health Hospital yet. I fully intend to shift my general dental care elsewhere, and if you are young and a person of color who is dental insurance you would do well not to come to the IU School of Dentistry (my personal recommendation based on the series of patient interactions that I have had).

TL; DR:
Pros: They'll take anyone even if you have no insurance
Cons: Read below. Proceed at your own leisure and risk.

Don't expect to get anything done in a timely manner. Students might be thorough--though why they missed 3 cavities and a crack in one of the previously existing fillings during the initial X-ray is completely lost upon me--however, scheduling system is usually so backed up, and the departments so disconnected from each other, that you'll be enduring MONTHS OF PAIN before any progress is made.

First dentist we were assigned to in Endo department chipped the tooth next to the he was working on, then had the decency to tell us to find another dentist to resolve the issue.
The second one we were assigned to was more polite, but when the patient tried to get in touch with her to make bite adjustments that were at first overlooked, she proceeded to cut us off by saying the "policy change" does not allow doctors to get in touch with the patients individually without going through their convoluted and ridiculously connected phone line/ system.
If you're trying to make payment by installment plan, you better hope you have at least a solid hour of phone time each week just to get all the information straightened out. Their ultimate goal is to pump out as many shoddily qualified dentists as possible and collect the tuition, not to serve the community around. Let's just be clear at that.
