Just moved to Cedar Rapids from Kansas City and was nervous about switching to a new dentist. I was amazed at how much I loved my experience at Uptown Dental! The office is very updated and modern. The front desk staff is friendly and welcoming. Everyone is on time and the process flows smoothly. Leah and Dr Mueller are the best hygienist and dentist I’ve ever had! They are both fun, genuine, and caring. They make the appointment very enjoyable!

I’ve been meaning to write this review for years. I have been going here since high school and now have two little ones I bring here. They have the most friendly and welcoming staff. My kids get so excited to go to the dentist because the environment is so warm and kind. The staff interact with my kids so well and Dr. Joe does amazing and knows what he is talking about.

In early 2022, my wife and I were referred to Uptown Dental in Marion, Iowa by her orthodontist. Prior to scheduling an appointment, my wife telephoned Uptown to determine if the practice accepted our insurance. My wife received an affirmative response and began receiving care at Uptown. We have primary and secondary insurance from large, nationwide insurance companies, which we did not consult with to verify network coverage with Uptown. In 35 years I’ve never had to contact my insurance with “In Network” inquiries. The provider has always been accurate and honest regarding their insurance network status. My wife attended appointments on May 18, 2022, and June 6, 2022. On July 21, 2022, we received a generic invoice from Uptown which was not itemized and simply contained a vague statement regarding an insurance payment and indicated an amount due of $483. We paid that bill because we mistakenly assumed that Uptown had been honest and forthright in their communications regarding our insurance, simply put, we trusted them. On July 26, 2022, I had an appointment and on August 23, 2022, my wife had another appointment. On October 13, 2022, we received another generic invoice from Uptown indicating that we owed an additional $248.60. Prior to any appointments, Uptown never provided an itemized estimate, nor did they inform us that Uptown is outside the networks of both of our insurance companies, and we were never charged money up front. As a result of the second invoice, my wife called Uptown on November 23, 2022, to inquire about the charges. Uptown assured my wife that everything was billed correctly through our insurance companies. Upon further questioning, Uptown emailed itemized statements from each of our appointments as well as a Statement of Benefits from our secondary insurance company, not our primary insurance company. First off, the Statement of Benefits indicated that Uptown was outside the network of my secondary insurance company, resulting in the requirement of a deductible and considerably lower insurance coverage. Secondly, a review of the itemized statements revealed that nearly every item should have been covered by my primary insurance. On November 28, 2022, I went to Uptown seeking clarification on these discrepancies. The Uptown staff was indifferent to my inquiry, unenthusiastic, showed no empathy and required protracted questioning before they would provide information. Additionally, the responses I received seemed rehearsed or practiced, which led me to believe that Uptown deals with insurance issues frequently. When I pointed it out, Uptown admitted that they were not within the insurance network of my secondary insurance, and they blamed all other billing issues on my primary insurance company. During my discussion with Uptown, they never disputed that my wife had called and made the initial insurance inquiry. Uptown simply deferred that it was my responsibility to ensure that they were within my insurance networks. Later that day, my primary insurance informed me that Uptown is outside of their network as well, resulting in no insurance coverage whatsoever. They also informed me that Uptown should have informed us as soon as they were made aware of the denial of benefits, and, at the very least, should have informed us when either of us inquired about the billing. Uptown never informed us, at any time, that they were outside of our insurance networks, we had to discover it ourselves. By billing me “Out of Network”, Uptown was able to charge more money and for additional services than what would be covered for an “In Network” client, to the amount of over $600. The lack of transparency in insurance coverage communication and the generic invoicing with no itemized estimates prior to appointments causes the perception that Uptown’s business practices fall somewhere in between misleading and deceptive in my opinion.
