Terrible. I would give zero stars if I could. Just the worst dentist and dental care. I didn't plan to leave a review, but I now feel it's important to let others know about this clinic and dentist.
One important thing to mention is Tracy, the hygienist, is fantastic. I will miss her but I hope she can get out of this place and find a better work environment someday.
The original doctor I had was quite good, but then he left the practice. Then the dentist they assigned to me was awful. She had NO compassion whatsoever. She was incompetent in everything dental. They missed an infection in an x-ray I had in a tooth - and told me about it almost 2 years later. They offered up excuse after excuse about how they have the x-rays listed - and didn't see it. No one ever accepting any accountability for all the mistakes made at this office. On my first visit with this new dentist, she told me I would have to have all my teeth pulled out eventually. (I have since had a new dental evaluation and was told that was not so). She appeared to be threatened by anyone who questioned her "authority" in any way proving even more incompetence.
Then while attempting to deliver and place a crown on an implant, she somehow stripped the screw - blamed it on the manufacturer and taking ZERO responsibility, (which of course I know these things happen) but her behavior about it was unacceptable. She left the room and would not explain to me what was really going on. She then sent me to another dentist - leaving me with an unscrewed crown stuck in my unable-to-close mouth. Of course I had NO intentions of ever returning to this place again, so as soon as I could, I cancelled my membership with the clinic and all my future appointments. But then this dentist - who has done nothing but fail at every part of her job - had the AUDACITY to send me a letter saying she was cancelling me as a patient because we didn't "connect". They also cancelled my husband as well.
Don't even get me started on the

I've always had a good experience at this dentist's office. The staff are friendly and kind. I've needed fillings in the past that included anesthesia and today was the first time I had a slight reaction to the epinephrine in it. Dr. Lauren was kind and compassionate throughout the whole experience. She reassured me that it was normal and would pass quickly and reminded me to breath slowly. She shared an experience with me that made me feel heard and supported. I have so much gratitude for her presence and support in what could have been a much more difficult situation.

WORST DENTAL EXPERIENCE EVER. They only have one dentist and she wants to milk your insurance and try to treat you for issues you don't even have. There used to be a couple good dentists working there... no more. After my last appointment I had I will NEVER go back. I hadn't even got 2 teeth cleaned and this "dentist " is in there yanking on my cheeks telling me I need braces and have an under bite! I'm in my 40s and been seeing a dentist my whole life! I've never heard this before! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME HERE. THIS PLACE IS PITIFUL
I honestly have never been so unsatisfied with a dental experience until I had a few appointments here.
The first initial visit I had here was pleasant but every visit following that was terrible. I ended up needing a cap on one of my teeth and the whole process was a nightmare. I had to come in multiple times just to see if the cap they made for me would fit; on the third try (which I decided was also my final visit) the doctor just decided to shave down the cap so that it would fit because it was still wrong. Every time I was there the hygienist would pop the temporary cap off my tooth without numbing the tooth or anything. I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance but that process was so painful that I sat there in the chair in tears. They did not administer any lidocaine until I verbally expressed that I was in pain. I guess it was silly of me to assume that the tears expressed that enough. Every time I came here for a visit there was a different doctor working on my teeth which was odd and inconsistent. Overall really disappointed in the care I received here. I will not be returning and I would not recommend this office to anyone.

The staff were pleasant but it did not feel to me like their sanitary practices were what I expect of a dental or healthcare practitioner. I was also disappointed in their lack of organizational proficiency with a new patient.
I recently had my first appointment at West Asheville Family Dentistry. The hygienist unwrapped a sterile package of tools and dropped one. She wiped it off and was putting it back on the table to use. I asked her if she planned on using it. She said "yes" as she "had wiped it off." I said "Really? You are going to use it after dropping it on the floor?" She said "yes, that's usually good enough." I said "Usually?"
I called the next day to speak with Kendall, the dentist with whom I met. Unfortunately I learned she was only an interim dentist for that day. Neither she nor the practice had told me that.
The dentist I reached on the phone was not disturbed nor apologetic to hear the hygienist intended on using a tool that was no longer sterile.
Secondly, while I was due for xrays, these were not performed the day I was there. I had to be proactive and make another appointment.
Thirdly, while they had received my former xrays, they had failed to get my perio chart. So I had to call my former dentist to get that information.
As I prioritize high standards for sanitary practices, organizational efficiency, and receptivity to opportunities for improvement, I feel there is a lot West Asheville Family dentistry practice could improve upon.

My family typically had a good experience with this practice with a few weird interactions. When we moved from West Asheville it became too difficult to get there for cleanings. After we moved we apparently owed them $75. Rather than trying to find us, this practice sent us to a collection agency. A collection agency! I didn't get one phone call or piece of mail from their office stating that we owe the money. Any time I owed on the day of, I paid on site.
I told them we moved and that's why we changed practices. So they knew we had a new address. Our insurance was still current and they could have asked Delta Dental for our new address. My phone number hasn't changed in 15 years. They could have called. A quick google search of me turns up our new address. So many steps could have been taken before a collection agency was involved. This is a lazy way to do business. You're messing with people's credit because you can't be bothered to use google?

They told me I needed 3 fillings, so I got a second opinion and didn't actually need any.
Every time I go, I pay the quoted amount and then later get another bill for supposed things insurance didn't cover (other people I know have experienced the same and when they asked for a break down actually the dentist owed them 40 instead of the 300 dollars they supposedly owed). I've also gotten multiple fillings that have then cracked later leaving my teeth with sharp edges and have been unable to floss between others.
Overall I don't trust their business practices, it seems to me like there is some scamming occuring.

Front office people were unpleasant and unhelpful.
Dr. Scanlon should be avoided at all costs. She is rude and disinterested in her patients.
And, to make it even worse, services are wildly expensive!

My first visit here after almost 30 years at my former dentist, was a positive experience. They were able to contact my former dentist for X-rays, so didn't need new ones. Addison, my hygenist, was gentle and professional. Dr. Lauren, my dentist, was very thorough and seemed to be very caring. At my former dentist I often didn't even see the dentist, only the hygenist - so this was a pleasant change and seemed to provide a higher level of care.

Had an emergency with older crowns coming loose. Kim got me in right away today and Dr. Lauren did a great job with a temporary fix.
Older post- Katherine did a great job by combining her knowledge and skill in a pleasing and professional manner. Would highly recommend her and Dr. T. and the practice. Dr. T did a complex bridge that is functioning beautifully.

West Asheville Family Dentistry is conveniently located, sure, but the reason I keep going back is because of their wonderful hygienist Tracey. She must keep little notes on her patients because even at only my second visit with her she took the time to ask me how my kids were doing. Now, after several years, I feel like we’re old friends catching up during my biannual cleaning. Not to be ignored, she is also one of the more gentle hygienists I’ve ever experienced.

Our hygenist, Tracy, is amazing with pre-schoolers! Patient, upbeat, calming, and fun - she made the visit so smooth and easy. Dr. Townsend is great as well - laid back, kind, and personable. That's true of the whole staff, actually. Highly recommend, especially for parents of littles!
