Not only had I not gone to the dentist in a long time but I was glad to have found Dr. B's office, they didn't discourage me at all for not going to the dentist but instead encouraged and informed me of ways to help take care of my oral health. I went to Dr B as a new patient 8 months ago and have been contemplating my experience for that long so not to make a hasty judgement. Here was my experience: During my teeth cleaning conducted by a dental hygienist, my permanent retainer, a metal wire that was cemented to the back of my teeth 10 years ago, became detached. Part of the wire was no longer cemented and it was poking me in the mouth. After the hygienist was done, I met Dr B for the first time and asked her about what needs to be done to fix my retainer. And she said I should go to my orthodontist to get it fixed. I asked if her office would pay for it if I went to my ortho, and she said No, a retainer shouldn’t lose their bond through routine teeth cleaning, it was bad workmanship of my ortho, he should pay for it. Now enters the grey area of who is liable to fix my retainer? Me? Dr. B? Or my Orthodontist? I think any logical adult could come up with a reasonable justification on why you think it’s any one of those 3 options. But I think it still really irks me that Dr. B refused to guarantee the work they do and wouldn’t be willing to cover a ~$100 fix that wouldn’t have been needed if I didn’t go to their office that day. I went to my ortho, and I told Dr. West not about the scenario but just that it happened during a teeth cleaning. And like the saint he is, he offered to cover the cost of the repair because “he doesn’t want hygienist to feel like they have to be careful around these retainers”. So. Ultimately Dr B was right, My orthodontist covered the bill. But. What if he didn’t? Why didn’t she offer to cover it if he didn’t? I’m lucky I had one of the best orthodontist in 200sq. miles. He’s so kind, is a master at his craft, and stands behind his workmanship. I just wish I could say the same for Dr. B.
