I had a tooth break to the point of needing to be extracted. The initial extraction seemed to go fairly smoothly. I was placed on amoxicillin to prevent infection. I then ended up back in the office 1 week later with a bone spur that had to be cut out of my gum. I was changed to clindamycin as an antibiotic because I started itching with the amoxicillin, which is an adverse reaction. One week later, I was back! Pain in my jaw, swelling around the jaw and the lymph nodes on that side of my neck, inner ear trouble to the point I had missed 4 days of work because I couldn't work on a ladder, and hives from the clindamycin. Doc attempted to put me back on amoxicillin, noting it only made me itch, and recommended I see my GP about my ear problems. Thank heavens that I know NOT to take a medication that I've already reacted to negatively. I sought a second opinion and was treated for dry socket that afternoon. I walked out of the other dentist's office with only minor pain 15 minutes after the treatment for dry socket and feeling better than I had since the tooth had been extracted. I also saw my GP the same day, before the 2nd dentist, who was upset that I was placed back on amoxicillin with Dr. Huck knowing I had had an adverse reaction to it and placed me on cephalexin instead. Dr. Huck seemed upset when I couldn't tell him before he put me on antibiotics if I was allergic to them because I hadn't been on them. I was disappointed with the follow up with the complications and lack of knowledge about alternative antibiotics.
