I just had the most enraging experience here with my daughter. Before today, my experience with this office and all of the doctors and staff has been exceedingly positive for both myself and my daughters over several visits, which may be contributing to how shocked I am. I took my daughter in to get some baby teeth pulled since her adult teeth were coming in per the instructions of another hygienist there who'd seen my daughter previously. We were being served by a dentist we'd not met before, Dr. Young. First, the bedside manner seemed OK. Just OK. Dr. Young proceeded to repeatedly inject my child after what I can only assume was not competently achieving the desired numbness with the first set of injections, which is problematic in itself because it demonstrates, as I said, a competency issue. Being as I am the sole responsible party for advocating for my daughter and ensuring that her interactions with medical providers are adequate, collaborative (as any good doctor/patient relationship should be), and that she understands how to communicate with her healthcare professionals as she grows into her own person, I asserted my concern with the repeated injections as tactfully as I was able to. I could tell the dentist was mildly annoyed with what I'm sure she perceived as an overbearing mom, but I promise you that is the farthest description of my parenting style. In my opinion, when someone shows concern or anxiety, as an advocate or a patient, it's the providers responsibility to employ beside manner and communicate in an attempt to ease anxiety. That was not adequately provided, and we continued to the teeth pulling portion of the visit regardless. When my daughter exhibited discomfort and anxiety on the second tooth being pulled (they were going to do 4) and the doctor didn't respond except to continue doing what she was doing, I spoke up and asked that she please give her minute to recoup and chill out. I admit that I was distressed at this point and likely communicated it in a less tactful manner, but I can't completely remember what I said because I was angry at this point. She then stopped altogether, told me to go wait in the waiting room or we were done and when I attempted to discuss and consult with my daughter, she got up and left, leaving my daughter on the chair, numbed in sectors that were at this point unnecessary, and refused to complete the job. Which was honestly fine, but also shocking, unprofessional and ridiculous. If you are going into a profession where you do things to people's faces that hurt, then you should be prepared to sooth anxieties and communicate in a way that puts patients at ease rather than demanding they cooperate with your approach. Especially dealing with kids where these interactions and experiences set the tone for their perceptions of the field going forward. That's just crappy preventative medicine on a fundamental level. As I said, every other experience was exceptional. Including experiences with shots, pain etc. This was out of control and enraging. I am glad I advocated for my daughter, told her it was okay to let healthcare providers know when you're uncomfortable, and demand respect. Especially since the medical field so often treats people like uneducated weaklings in the shadow of their 'superior' knowledge and practice. Dr. Young, you have a responsibility to serve patients in the way they are best served, regardless of what you think about their anxiety or communication skills. I'm sure it is irrelevant to your office, but we won't be returning.
