The worst treatment that I have ever received. I was treated unethically and unprofessionally by both the dentist and receptionist, both during and after my visit.
I went to this office for a wisdom tooth removal procedure. After arriving at the office I was administered local anesthesia to the gums. The dentist then began breaking apart my tooth for extraction, at which point I started feeling pain. The local anesthesia was not sufficient for a procedure of this magnitude. I was showing signs of visible discomfort, and upon noticing, the doctor angrily stopped the procedure and chastised me. The dental assistant urged him to be patient, and he once again began the procedure, though I was still in a lot of pain. He then suddenly decided, against my wishes, to end the procedure. He began to suture up the cut in my gums, refusing to finish what he had started, and leaving me with a major wound.
Then he let me go home without any recommendations or after care instructions, just saying I had I nervous crisis. It was not a nervous crisis—I was just in shock after being berated by the medical professional who was actively performing my surgery. The night after the procedure I couldn’t sleep because of the pain I was experiencing. The next day, I had to call and request medication—something that they should have prescribed me in the first place.
Despite taking the medication they eventually provided, I got an infection that lasted for over a month, and ended in a visit to an urgent care center for additional help. I couldn’t sleep, eat, drink or even talk. I had to request time off from work, adding to my economic burden, and eventually had to pay for additional medicine to alleviate the pain out of pocket. I even had multiple cold sores and canker sores around my mouth.
In light of these events, I wanted to secure a copy of my medical records from the office. I was shocked when I called the office and, upon explaining the situation, the receptionist told me they reserve the right to deny medical record access. I re-stated that I wanted a copy of my records, and the receptionist got frustrated, refusing again before hanging up on me. It was not until later that I found out it is illegal to refuse a patient access to their records. It is even more shocking that to this day I still do not have my medical records from this office.
I ultimately feel very strongly that I received this treatment as a result of discrimination—racial/ethnic discrimination, socioeconomic discrimination, or a combination of the two. As a recipient of Medical, and a Latina immigrant, I am confident that I would not have received the same treatment were I a member of different identities. A medical provider should never, ever allow such factors to influence the quality of care they offer.
My experience was dangerous, and overall, I can safely say this is the worst treatment I have ever received. Don’t go here!
