I visited Dr. Hauptman’s office in early December of 2021 due to tooth pain and sensitivity. I pointed to a spot on a tooth that appeared to be a cavity. Dr. Hauptman didn’t evaluate the rest of my mouth, and instead only focused on that tooth. He x-rayed it and stated I needed to have a root canal because of the symptoms I was displaying. I had the procedure done at his office, but my symptoms didn’t go away. I told the staff on the phone and mentioned it to him again on my follow up appointment for a temporary crown. He informed me that I was not in pain since he removed the nerve. I knew I was in pain, but he was so dismissive that I assumed maybe I was still recovering from the root canal and should wait it out. The pain and sensitivity didn’t just continue after that. It got much worse, to the point that I could hardly eat or drink. The night before my appointment for my permanent crown, I used the light of my cell phone to look around the inside of my mouth and found the problem in the back of my mouth, several teeth away from tooth he’d just treated. If I could discover it with a cell phone light, I honestly have no idea how he missed it. I went back to his office for my permanent crown and told a staff member I was still in pain. She actually listened, took x-rays, and told me I would need to go to a specialist for a root canal. Dr. Hauptman then came in, shrugged his shoulders, and said, “Dental pain travels.” Shortly after that appointment, I sent his office a message detailing my displeasure that he’d performed a root canal on a tooth that likely only needed a filling. The tooth had decay, but he only recommended a root canal due to the pain and sensitivity. Had it not been for those symptoms, he would have filled the cavity instead of performing the procedure. Because he performed a root canal instead of a filling for the first tooth, his office made a lot more money, and I now have to live with a crown for the rest of my life. Additionally, I spent weeks in pain, all because he would not listen. Dr. Hauptman called me back to discuss my message, and actually blamed me for the first root canal. He told me that if I hadn’t pointed out that tooth, he wouldn’t have done a root canal on it. I’m not a dentist. I didn’t go to dental school. I don’t think a dentist should be taking my opinion when it comes to diagnosing dental issues. I have no trust in Dr. Hauptman and will never use his services again. I only hope that he provides better care for his other patients. I would also recommend getting a second opinion before giving him money for root canals or other expensive procedures.
