Had an amazing experience. Holly did a great job of cleaning my teeth and removing stains. Dr Allison Hyatt found a cavity in my son’s tooth and quickly filled it right away. Couldn’t ask for anything more!

Patient Rights

About three years ago, my wonderful young dentist moved away to start her own practice, so I began searching for a another dentist. I consulted with R-H, who recommended three crowns. Her recommendation was somewhat consistent with (although more extensive than) my former dentist's "watch list." But I had two excellent dental insurance plans (and a medical plan that covered some dental costs), so essentially 100% of the work would be covered.

The problems began shortly thereafter. The number of crowns somehow expanded to six. R-H insisted all the crowns were needed and would last "the rest of your life." She said my teeth would be in great shape after the extremely extensive work.

Then one crown mysteriously disappeared after I arrived to have it seated, so R-H made and placed a less durable, unnatural-looking, orange-tinged, "same-day" crown instead.

And the bills started to roll in. When I poliitely disputed them, the office manager rudely and loudly insisted I owed thousands of dollars. I spent months pouring over EOBs and preparing spreadsheets showing the office had been overpaid. Also, my insurance providers were sending numerous letters to R-H's office requesting missing information and x-rays. Alpproximately a yea later, the office finally refunded my down payment.

Sadly, the worst was yet to come. After all the crown work had been completed, the office sent me a text message for a routine cleaning appointment. The text message had a time of 2:30pm, which was automatically added to my phone's calendar. At around 2:00pm on the day of the appointment as my nine-year-old daughter and I were getting ready to leave (we live five minutes away), the office manager called to scream that I had missed my appointment. The manager admitted to putting the wrong time in the text message but still viciously blamed me. My daughter said, "Mommy, you need a new dentist."

A few months later, I saw a young dentist who insisted I needed two replacement crowns immediately to avoid root canal therapy. I was shocked. Had not R-H completed all necessary work as she had claimed? He showed me x-rays of deep decay under the two crowns.

His crown work was excellent, but alas the insurance providers refused to pay him for one crown because R-H had billed for seating the same crown! He sent my account to collections, asking for almost two thousand dollars in payment.

Numerous times I contacted R-H's office (by phone text and mail) for my records and an explanation but got the royal run around.

I then began the long, laborious process of appealing to my insurance providers. R-H sent illegible records to my primary provider, significantly delaying the appeals process. The primary insurance provider finally ruled against R-H (stating R-H had not provided proper documentation supporting work on the crown in question), paid the other dentist and made R-H refund the money they had paid her.

But the secondary insurance provider insisted on expert dental testimony, so I contacted my former wonderful young dentist and the MD Attorney General's Office for assistant. The AGO got records from R-H and testimony from the dentist who had redone R-H's work.

In August of 2022, my secondary insurance provider finally ruled that R-H's work "did not meet all the criteria for clinical acceptability," ruled against her, forced her to repay the money she had been given and paid the young man who had re-done R-H's work.

Bottom line: If you are looking for an honest, professional, caring, competent dentist who keeps accurate records and does not perform or bill for substandard, incomplete dental work, keep looking. Always remember that you have a right to question your dentist about issues and to copies of all your dental and medical records.
