This is my first review because I feel very passionate about the issue(s) I had and hope to prevent anyone else from enduring what I was lucky to avoid.
I went to Park Cities Family Dentistry because I had severe tooth pain and was almost certain I had an infection of some sort, in addition to needing my general cleaning. I informed the dental assistant and dentist of my tooth pain, after which they took several x-rays and then we proceeded to the cleaning. The problem tooth was also visually an issue as I had severe swelling, bleeding, sensitivity, and more.
After I was finished with my cleaning, the dentist came in to have a final look and discuss my x-rays regarding the tooth I was having issues with. He looked at the x-rays and told me that he wasn't sure why my x-ray of the problematic tooth looked the way it did because he hadn't seen a tooth with the characteristics it had, and that it looked different than teeth requiring root canals. After acknowledging the severity of the way the gums and "infection" looked, and the uncertainty that the x-ray provided us, he proceeded to tell me that I was "more than welcome to get a second opinion from an endodontist", but that he could also perform a root canal "although he wasn't sure if it would even help, but it could rule out if the tooth was dead". He said if and only if, I chose to have a root canal done with him, he was happy to provide me pain medication and antibiotic to start until I could get my root canal done in a few days. Furthermore, I asked quite a few questions because I was trying to understand what I needed and why this was happening. The more questions I asked, the more short and rude his responses were. Additionally, when I asked if I could think about the root canal and call back the next day to schedule, but if I could still take a pain prescription to last me for the day as I was in obvious pain, his response was "Well I don't know, maybe you can't be trusted with such prescriptions, I don't know your history." I was shocked! I was essentially told that I may have a prescription pill problem, which 1) is very unprofessional and rude and 2) it was very evident from just a quick look at my tooth and my x-rays that something painful was happening.
I am not a dental professional, but I do know that a root canal is almost never the initial solution, however, trusting his opinion I booked a root canal and proceeded to get the various medications I desperately needed. However, something did not sit right with me because of the dentist's demeanor and the way he was very adamant about NOT giving me any medication unless I booked then and there with him for my root canal. I felt this showed he actually did not care about my well being, but moreso just about booking a procedure. Also, I asked a few times for recommendations but was not provided any. So, I trusted my instinct and called back and received a referral for an endodontist who saw me immediately and informed me that the tooth was definitely NOT dead and that the issue I had was NOT a tooth problem at all, as I had bone issues. I was immediately referred to a periodontist (who has been able to assist with all my periods/dental needs) and this endodontist was shocked that this dentist wanted to immediately perform a root canal due to the characteristics of the tooth. Also, the endodontist was happy to confirm I was squared away with pain management until I could see the periodontist (as doctors are required to do) despite me not going under his care.
I was later informed that I had severe bone loss, almost 100% around the problem tooth, and that a root canal would have almost definitely caused me to lose the tooth in addition to not helping the problem at all. I am very happy I trusted my instinct because fortunately nothing bad came of my visit, however, other Yelpers/Google reviewers who had similar situations here which pushed me for a second opinion, I would most likely be toothless right now, as there was not enough bone to even attach an implant to in the event of losing the tooth.
