Get a second opinion. They told me I needed 3 crowns and 3 fillings. Dentist in Durango recommended 1 filling, the others were fine.

It's taken me a while to leave a review here because I wasn't 100% sure if I wanted to leave such a bad review, but I felt that I needed to because others need to be aware of how this practice works.
I moved to Pagosa just over a year ago and needed to find a dentist for my 6 month check up & cleaning. I figured since I drive past Pagosa Smiles almost every day this would be an easy place to go. I wasn't having any issues with any of my teeth so I was surprised to be told that I had some major tooth decay on multiple teeth, that I needed 3 crowns on teeth that are majorly cracked, 3 core buildup including pins, and 2 fillings. Keep in mind, one of the teeth he said I needed a crown on, I had just had a crown put on 6 months prior. He said that I didn't have any crowns, I pointed out which tooth had a root canal & crown and he said he saw the root canal but not the crown. I guess my endodontist & dentist did a pretty fantastic job on my root canal & crown so that he couldn't tell I had that done. He then said my crown "wasn't up to their standards".
On top of this, he wanted me to pay to remove a perfectly fine permanent retainer I had on my bottom teeth because "I would have a hard time keeping that area cleaned" - I had that permanent retainer since 1995 and have done a pretty fantastic job of keeping those teeth cleaned & cavity free. Then he said I needed "FastBraces" - um no. I told them I would take everything they said into consideration and I compared the dental x-rays taken to the ones I had taken the previous year from my dentist I saw for 20+ years. My dentist told me that they didn't see anything that's changed and to go get a second opinion from another dentist in town. Which I did.
I am so glad that I did because he confirmed exactly what I was thinking. I didn't need any of that work done. He said he would do it if I wanted to spend money on things I didn't need, but that I only needed two fillings replaced.
The only positive thing I can say about Pagosa Smiles is that it was very clean and that the staff was friendly. Other than that, I feel like they just want whatever money they can get from you and insurance.
