I had been happy with my previous dentist but his office did not accept my insurance, so I decided to switch. I made an appointment to come in for a teeth cleaning at Dental Care of Portland on February 18 (Writing now on April 15.).
The dentist’s young assistant was pleasant but anxious and self-conscious. The room didn’t look entirely clean and sparkling the way you want your dentist’s room to look. Dr. Bhui entered and asked me in a jocular tone, “How young are you?” I’m 62. I asked him how old he was and he told me, “Fifty-one. I’m catching up with you.” All mildly unsettling first impressions.
Dr. Bhui, who’d just seen my x-rays, told me sadly that I had a lot of bone loss. I knew I had bone loss. My previous dentist had let me know, though with a less funereal aspect. Still, I'd come this far in life without major tooth issues.
Then Dr. Bhui had me open my mouth to do what I assumed was a cursory visual examination, and he inserted a sharp instrument, and it hurt so much that I yelled, reflexively. Br. Bhui apologized, and observed that the enamel on that tooth was thinner than he had realized. He proceeded to tell me that the enamel on four of my teeth was so negligible that they needed fillings.
I think it was a mixture of trust in authority and conditioned politeness that made me reply, “Okay.”
I should also mention that Dr. Bhui WAS the hygienist. His assistant assisted, but she herself was not a dental hygienist. This too was unusual.
Dr. Bhui applied multiple little Novocain squirts to different areas of my mouth and proceeded to both clean my teeth and do … whatever. Four fillings. My memory of what he actually did after the rain of Novocain is hazy; I think I was a little in shock, and trying to be a good cooperative patient (for which the doctor thanked me at the end). I had a vague idea that these were not normal fillings of the type I’d gotten throughout my life, but rather fillings-as-reinforcements, buttressing for my deficient enamel.
Dr. Bhui told me to call him if I experienced any lingering sensitivity. I took that as an excess of caution. I’ve had lots of fillings in my life and never experienced much sensitivity afterward.
But oh boy. My mouth has never been the same, two months out. For the first few weeks, I kept thinking the sensitivity might abate, but it didn’t. Moreover, there was, and still is, a strange GRIPPING sensation in a couple of teeth – like they’re wearing something tight that’s squeezing them. (I just googled “fillings too tight” and sure enough, it’s a thing that happens.)
I returned to my old dentist because I was worried what exactly had been done to my mouth, and I wanted the guy I trusted to have a look. He examined the fillings and tested them with his sharp instrument (no pain) and said they were well-sealed. He affirmed that it was “not a bad idea” to have had the fillings done. (Music to my ears. I wasn’t sure if the procedure had been straight-up dental abuse.) As for my shocking new sensitivity to hot and cold foods, he said that would fade, and he recommended Sensodyne toothpaste to make the sensitivity recede quicker. He said it was probable that during the polishing process … such and such was too “vigorous” … and he got a little technical … something about microns having been denuded from the outer teeth which would affect the movement of fluid within the teeth, and I'd experience this as pain, but there was no need to worry about actual damage having been done, and the sensations would go away by and by.
Well, bless him for saying that. But more than a month later, I’ve been using Sensodyne and I still don’t remotely have my old mouth back. Two of my teeth are still extremely sensitive, and the weird PUSHING sensation remains.
So I’m not in pain, but I do feel discomfort, and my life has changed. Now, every single day, my mouth reminds me that I was at the dentist.
I don’t think Dr. Bhui is a bad guy. I think he’s a nice guy. And I imagine he is probably a decent dentist. I just don’t think he’s a good dentist. I couldn’t possibly recommend him.
