Very nice and friendly staff and a very pleasant experience

I'm giving two stars because the receptionist and assistant were very nice to me

I included details in my new patient forms that I am extremely anxious, and have diagnosed mental illnesses, that made it difficult for me to go to a dentist for a long time, but I pushed myself to go, only to have those anxieties validated... The office staff and assistant were very nice to me and I felt comfortable with them, but with the dentist, I felt judged and the communication was really not great... He was scraping at my teeth and the sensations and sounds were scary, and he was saying a lot of numbers that I didn't understand, and I made sounds like "Huh?" to try to signal that I was confused, he just said "I'm just saying that to my assistant, I'll talk to you about this after." This was really scary for me, and I started crying during the exam, not because anything hurt, but because I was scared and overwhelmed. They didn't say anything and he didn't ask if I wanted to stop or if I needed a break.

When he finally did stop, he said, "Be honest with me. How long as it been?" My teeth are obviously not in great shape, but when he asked that, it made me feel judged, when I had already disclosed in my New Patient paperwork that I didn't have dental insurance for a long time, and was struggling with the anxiety of even coming to a dentist, on top of having depression and general anxiety, which made it difficult for me to take care of myself the way that I should have.

When I said it had been a long time, he started explaining what he wanted to do as a treatment plan, I was so anxious and overwhelmed, that I was barely registering what he was saying... I only know what they want to do because the front receptionist printed out a chart with a copy of everything they want to do, and my insurance breakdown of it.

For patients with anxiety and depression, I think it would be really helpful for the staff to remember that sometimes, we don't even have the energy to get out of bed, and that all of our energy is focused towards just surviving and making it one more day. It took a lot of courage for me to come to them, and I left having all of my anxieties validated. I want to call and cancel my appointment, but I'm too anxious to even make a phone call because I'm worried that they will shame me for cancelling.

I think it would also be helpful for new patients with anxiety, if the dentist or assistant will take just five minutes before starting to ask what can be done to help us feel more at-ease. The anxiety won't fully go away, but if Dr. Lamp had asked me this simple question, I would have been able to communicate that I was anxious, and that I have sensory issues and that I need a lot of communication in what is happening.

I understand that they are all very busy, but it would take just five minutes, maybe less, and it will help SO MUCH to try to avoid or mitigate these feelings. I think they could even have the assistant ask, and communicate these needs to the dentist on their way into the room. I wasn't able to communicate these needs during the exam, because my mouth was open, and I was already so scared, and I thought that if I tried to say anything or ask to stop the exam, that they might get mad at me.

I hope that someone reads this and makes this tiny effort for future patients, because I won't be able to return to this practice... I really liked the assistant and the receptionist, but even just writing this has me in tears again, and I wouldn't be able to go back into the office without crying and reliving that appointment
