I’ve seen advertisements for “no pain dentistry” but dismissed them believing they were untrue or overutilizing medication. My personal experience and my child’s experience with Dr. Thererur was so exceptional it warrants public notice. My son,currently 14 ,was traumatized by a previous dentist. The incident was so bad even check ups became unmanageable despite anti-anxiety medication.This resulted in abstaining from the dentist which further worsened his oral health.
With much fear and sweaty hands we prepared for his upcoming , long overdue dental check with Dr. Theurer. My son’s 5’ 11” stature adds further stress as he feels the weight of his embarrassment over his inability to cope.
I engaged in calming techniques and anti-anxiety medication prior to his visit. All proved comfortless. As expected the sites sounds and smells of the dental office upset him significantly.
Dr. Theurer talked to him calmly, slowly and compassionately. He was quick to address my sons embarrassment about his anxiety. After identifying all the equipment he was going to use and the steps he was going to take, he engaged my son with methods to let him know he could stop the procedure at any time. He allowed the numbing gel generous time for maximal effect. He then proceeded with the several shots necessary for the many cavities to fix. Again, he engaged my son in counting how long each shot would take , recruiting him in the effort and giving him some control.. This allowed him an opportunity to regain personal confidence in his abilities to be in the dentist chair. Yes my son cried and yes there were tears in his ears. But when the doctor stepped out (to allow maximum time for the medication to work) he delightfully confessed “it didn’t hurt at all!!”
From there the procedures were textbook and quickly completed. On the drive home my son was exuberant ( and so was I!)
He could not stop talking about how much he loved his dentist! He indicated he was “going to go to this dentist The rest of his entire life! “ He phrased it best when he said “this doctor is a luxury”. Several times that night he would spontaneously say “ I just love my dentist” As a mother I know what he was really saying was .....”I am no longer afraid”
Dr. Theurer changed the entire narrative of my sons experience and reclaimed his dignity and confidence. Anyone who has had a child with this much anxiety understands the pure joy when that burden is no longer a burden. Dr. Theurer’s humanity, professionalism and
artfullness with my child Is not only a gift to my son, but has indeed removed the ache from this mother’s heart😊
A sidenote worth sharing. The next day I had an appointment and it did not hurt when I got my shots either!I This is the real deal!
