I just had my third visit at North Shore Family Dental Care in Maumelle. It is right off the exit from I 430. My third visit was just like the other two. The staff was helpful and courteous. Doctor Decoursey was thorough and explained to me what was causing my pain and prescribed something to help me. I appreciate the professionalism of all the staff and the medical knowledge of Doctor Decoursey.

I am always nervous about going to the dentist, but seeing Dr. DeCoursey at North Shore was a breeze. I've been 3 times this past year. Scheduling my appointment was easy and Jim at the front desk easily worked around my job hours. I never had to wait long in the front office either! Sometimes dentist devices/tools/methods can be uncomfortable, but at North Shore, they have new technology that eliminated my past discomfort at getting a cleanings, fillings and X-rays. I also have insurance that is not carried commonly and Dr. Decoursey handled that with no problem. I highly recommend him!

Everyone was very nice and friendly, but I was very hurt and confused by the treatment the doctor provided. I was seen for an erupted, infected, and very painful wisdom tooth causing multi-systemic complications and severe pain. I informed them that I am recovering from gastroenteritis/colitis with stomach ulcers only a week before and I have continued to have stomach pain and nausea worsened by NSAID's (anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen and Aleve), and for this reason specifically, I asked if he would please, please prescribe something stronger for pain that wouldn't tear up my already very damaged stomach. The doctor politely informed me that studies have shown that things like Hydrocodone are "actually no more effective in helping ease this kind of pain than Ibuprofen, since the pain is due to inflammation," and told me to take 800mg Ibuprofen alternating with Tylenol. I was given antibiotics and an immediate referral to an oral surgeon for removal of all 4 problematic wisdom teeth and sent on my way. He said it needed to be dealt with as soon as possible because it was to the point it was affecting the nearby nerves. I was left to suffer with agonizing pain for AT LEAST the next several days, as I have to wait through the weekend and in to next week in hopes of getting an appointment ASAP with the ortho surgeon.

I understand doctors being conservative with prescribing practices regarding narcotic pain medication nowadays. But I was asking for one-time prescription for severe acute pain that he acknowledged was backed up by his own assessment, diagnostic, and radiological evidence. I was asking for enough for a few days until I can get the problem treated. If this isn't a medically justified/clinically appropriate and low risk scenario for prescribing 10-15 pain pills, I don't know what is.

So I am left with the option of either causing further serious damage to my stomach and adding epigastric pain to the severe tooth/jaw/ear/sinus/face pain caused by the nerve involvement of the wisdom tooth problem, or having nothing to take for pain except Tylenol, which is indicated for mild to moderate pain at best. If I was having only mild to moderate pain, I probably wouldn't have even felt badly enough to go to the dentist, much less call about 20 different dentist offices that morning trying to find someone who could squeeze me in last minute that same day. I feel hurt that he wouldn't address my pain at all except to recommend treatment that is both medically contraindicated and dangerous in my situation. It seemed irresponsible and cruel to do this to me when I came to him begging for help and he made it sound like my problem needed immediate intervention.

Again, he was very very nice and appeared sympathetic, and so did his staff, which is the only reason I am giving this a rating of 2 instead of 1... I'm just so surprised he would let someone suffer that much when he could have possibly helped even a LITTLE so easily and effortlessly. I walked away just tearful, feeling incredulous and dreading the next several days with an even worse sense of doom and gloom. I feel like this experience was disappointing and worrisome enough to share with friends, family, colleagues on Google Reviews, Yelp, and all of my social media accounts, and I will not be returning to North Shore Family Dental. I would hate for this to happen to someone else. :(
