I could not have asked for a better experience getting my braces through the school of Orthodontics. The price was extremely helpful and only cost me a little over $3400 for braces which is a much better deal than at a private practice. Everyone in the clinic was always so professional, kind and courteous each time I went for an appointment. Denise who works the front desk is so kind and welcomes everyone in with a warm welcome. Dr. Keyser was the resident over my case and Dr. Brown was the faculty member that I saw on each visit. I am so glad they were the ones over my case and I loved each visit with them. They both were always helpful in answering any questions I had, keeping me updated on where everything was in the process and simply making me feel at home. Yesterday, 5/13/21 is when I got my braces off and it was also Dr. Keyser’s last day in the clinic as she has now graduated. She will have a great orthodontic practice one day. Dr. Brown has the best bedside manner of anyone I have ever met. One of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Even as I moved out of state for another job I still kept coming back so I could finish my braces with them. They were so helpful and courteous in working with me to ensure my appointments were at times that worked for me. I would give this place 10 stars if I could! Thank you UNC School of Orthodontics and specifically Dr. Keyser and Dr. Brown for helping me improve my smile and for a great experience!

Scam Illegal False Claim

I had this place make a claim against my state tax refund for a procedure they CLAIM I had done almost 10 years ago! I had never heard of this place before in my life much less ever had any procedure done by them. I never received a bill, a collection notice, a phone call nothing and then out the blue some 10 years later they claim I had a biopsy done when I had my wisdom teeth removed by another dentist in another state! I contacted the dentist that they said had done the biopsy and was told they have no idea what they are talking about my bill was paid in full the day it was done. So now I'm trying to find an attorney to get my tax return refunded to me from a place I had never heard of prior to having them illegally take my state tax return. This place is a scam and regardless of if you go there or not keep a eye on your tax return.

Inconvenient Schedule Difficult Location Expensive

Parents beware! Daughter is currently getting braces here. She is a high sch student & has missed many classes due to their schedule. Be very aware that the ONLY appointments they have available are DURING school hours, & only TWO DAYS a month. If your student orthodontist is doing training, on vacation, etc. you have to wait 6-8 weeks between appointments. If you have to reschedule, it could be 4-6 weeks later. I've had to wait up to 8 weeks for our next appointment. Also, you have to park in the parking deck, cross the busy road (pedestrian bridge is out), navigate construction, then the halls, & finally the elevator. Be prepared to receive many, many schools excuses over the years like the one in the picture. Cost us $4000+.

The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because the staff/Docs are nice.

Poor Communication Long Wait Time Friendly Staff Expensive

I had a very odd experience. I was given a referral here and after a month or so was called to make an appointment. I unfortunately missed that call, but called back and got hold of someone right away. What was strange was the woman I talked to insisted they never called me and transferred me over to someone else, who attempted to transfer me back to the person I had just talked with - who again claimed they never called me and also said they had no record of me.

Well, I saved the voice mail they had left and played it for them, proving once and for all they had called me and that I was supposed to set up an appointment.

After this I was told my dentist would have to resend the referral. I ended up waiting another several months before hearing back. I finally have an appointment set up now, and I hope things go well.

EDIT:

Had my appointment. It went very well. Everyone was friendly and the doctor I spoke with put me at ease (I have ondontophobia) and answered all my questions. The only downside was the cost. I paid close to $100 to basically just be told to make another appointment to get my teeth extracted. I had a small, 2 minute exam done. They already knew which teeth needed to be taken care of because it was explained in my referral sheet. It seems I could have easily skipped the "consultation" and just made the appointment to get my teeth pulled and saved the money and gas.

World Class Care Highly Recommended Skilled Doctors

Their periodontal care is world class. I have been to other depts as well. Ranked #1 dental school in the nation. Dr. Susin and his team are world class doctors and most caring. Their technical skill is most importantly unmatched. I would recommend highly for periodontal care.

Unprofessional Lack of Empathy Poor Communication

Unfortunately my experience was less than stellar, upon my last few visits. The rates are really no better than going to a regular dentist, which kind of defeats the purpose of helping those in low (or no) income situations. I understand this is a "teaching" program, but having a dental student and dental professional sit in the room and talk ABOUT me, rather than TO me was not only unprofessional, but just plain RUDE. I heard words that were actually starting to scare me, but not once did either of them try to explain to ME what issues I was facing, and what would need to be done to resolve them. They discussed my x-rays without ever bothering to acknowledge I was in the room. Even worse, I overheard students actually making fun of me, while I sat in a chair, with my mouth pried open, unable to speak or move. Then someone had the gall to say (not to ME, of course) it was "my own fault" for not taking care of my teeth, unaware and uncaring of the fact that I came from a low-income family, who didn't take me to my first dentist visit until I was sixteen years old, or the fact that I had not even really been fully educated about dental care, until I was in my early twenties, which by that point I had more than a few problems with my teeth, due to my lack of knowledge and education about dental care, and the fact that I didn't have the means to visit a dentist regularly. My last visit ensured I would never return to this program again, after (yet again) having them talk about me, rather than TO me, and fail to provide me with any information about what exactly was wrong with my teeth/gums. While the students here are capable, my personal experience is that they lack any "bedside manner" or professionalism, when it comes to treating people kindly, or talking to them about their dental care and how to resolve present issues and prevent future ones. I would not recommend this program to anyone who had another option. Much of the time it was as if the "right hand had no idea what the left hand was doing" and vice versa. They are incredibly difficult to get on the phone, they don't return calls, and overall I find much of the staff/students there unprofessional, and lacking empathy.

Professional Thorough Examination Good Listener Relaxing Experience Diverse Array of Dental Talent

I saw Dr Ryan Cook for a very painful upper right molar. He took a detailed history of my teeth, performed a very thorough examination of the affected molar, and then discussed my treatment options with me. He listened to me, answered all of my questions and helped me relax. I will be returning soon for a root canal and a crown. I am so glad that we have such a diverse array of dental talent that we can easily access in situations such as these. Everyone I dealt with was very professional and eager to serve the patients.
