Island Ohana Dental

Yesterday our daughter's Susie and Sarah had great check ups. No cavities. Doctor was cordial and engaged them in conversation while working on our daughter's. Mahalo for the continued good care of our children!

Island Ohana Dental- the best I've ever been to! My family of 6 (including myself), have been regulars here for some years now and have not have any negative experiences what so ever! From the moment we walk in the front door we always feel welcomed and cared for. We love the way the entire staff works together and has fun doing it. I wish I could mention everyone's names but too many! I also laugh a lot on my visits. Dr. Garrett is a blast!! He makes everybody laugh. He treats the staff like family. I no longer have the fears I used to growing up with the dentist I had in the past. Dr. Garret always reminds me that dentistry should not hurt! Mahalo gang! Love these guys!

Check-in was a breeze; swift yet thorough. Dr. Brian Sato and assistant, Julie, were SUPERB!! They both made me feel comfortable from the start; very patient with me, caring in the procedure they were going to do, as well as, informing me during the after-care following my oral surgery.

Do not bring your children here.
My five year old son along with my other children would come here every six months for check ups and cleaning.
My son has never got a proper cleaning from the dentist. She would only look and say, “looks good”
Now because of that, my son has five cavities and one abscess removed.
When she saw he had an abscess, she quickly referred him elsewhere, and said she could not do that.
Why call your self a dentist if you don’t do your job correctly?
My son suffered with tooth pain and had an emergency situation.he also had high fever and was seen by the ER.
When we called for an app., they took their sweet time and did not seem to treat it as an emergency.
As parents we were thinking that my son had perfect teeth and no cavities.
That is what the dentist told us.
Then she quickly panicked and sent us somewhere else to clean up after her failed work.
We are so deeply disappointed at this situation.
I would say island Ohana does okay cleaning for adults, but as far as for kids, do your self a favor and look somewhere else for a dentist.
We waisted our money and time at this place.
I’m happy we found a good dentist elsewhere.

Every time I come here the staff is always friendly. Dr. Kakarla is very nice, knowledgeable, and you can tell she really cares for us as her patients. I very much would recommend DR. Kakarla to anyone who is searching for a dentist in the Hilo area, that takes children & adults.

I found Dr. Garrett very unfriendly and he said I needed fillings. I had been with another dentist the year before I had to go to this clinic and my teeth were good according to that previous dentist. I brushed and flossed like I always did and then suddenly I needed fillings? I wasn’t even 18 yet to even figure out for myself that something seemed off. My teeth weren’t sensitive at the time either. My teeth now years later are worse than before they gave me the fillings.

Looking for somewhere else to get my dental work done. Went in initially to see if I could get my wisdoms pulled and get x-rays taken. Was told I would get a referral but never got one. I waited patiently until a couple months later when covid lockdowns started. I figured I'd just wait it out because they probably needed time to get their business in order under the new covid measures. But never received any call or email about the referral. Called twice over a couple months and was always told they would check on it and call me back but I never got a response. I finally called and told them I was considering yanking the teeth myself because of the pain they were putting me in and they finally filled the referral... over a year later. I scheduled a routine cleaning at the same time, about 2 weeks out. 2 days before the appt they text to say they have to cancel my appt. Done with that circus. Gonna try find a reliable provider elsewhere

Had a different dentist everytime that didn't know what was going on with my children. Always referring out which is annoying. Why even call yourself a dentist if your specialty is cleaning? My child was referred out and I ended up staying with the referral. I also waited way too long to be seen. 10-15 minute wait is tolerable, but 1 hour! Now that's just poor planning and messy. I highly recommend you take your dental needs elsewhere, esp. If you have children.

By far the best dentistry practice I have experienced on the island, for myself and my son! The dentists provided options, explanations, answers to all of my questions, and were very fast, effective, and efficient. Highly recommended!

I was a new patient today - the clinic was very clean, and they were all super kind and personable! I am so thankful I have found a great dentist!
