Dentistry 801 Grand

After being a customer of Dr. Hutchison's for 15+ years, including bringing my family into the practice, they have gone down hill considerably. The practice has become a money grab since the change in ownership a few years back. Not only are they trying to upsell you on things, the quality of care has declined considerably as well. A near constant turnover in hygienists doesn't help the matter either. Recently, our 6 year old had a number of fillings placed and they had to be repaired/replaced by another dentist within 1 year of them being completed by Dentistry 801 grand. One tooth also required a crown because the cavity on the original filling was not completely removed, which allowed for further degradation of the tooth. When 801 Dentistry was approached with this issue, their answer was that our son has bad teeth and we weren't caring for them properly....thus their original work was done correctly and no refunds or even partial refunds would be granted. Our family is very diligent about dental care and our other two children have never had issues. Despite this re-work being $1000+ of work, that is only half the reason we are leaving this practice. Consider this when deciding to become a client at this clinic.

I have been coming to Dr. Hutchinson for dental work for years! He was very professional and has the bedside manner that patients love to see. On my recent visit I was informed that he will no longer be practicing dentistry. That he is taking retirement. It truly saddened my day and even had me tearing up to know that I will no longer have him as my dentist. Although I wish him the best in his retirement he’s going to be missed more than he knows. I use to fear going to the dentist until someone recommended Dr. Hutchinson. The past 30+ years with him had made my experience going to the dentist a pleasant experience. I and “many” others will miss his pleasant demeanor and his professionalism!

Relocated to Des Moines and was in search of a new dentist. I chose Dentistry 801 after going through many google reviews and I am so happy I did. They are friendly, professional, and do an amazing job. The office is clean and well taken care of. My fiancé needed a little extra work on his gums (it had been a while) and they got him in for the additional deep cleaning the next day. Grateful I found our dentist office. I am new to Dentistry 801 and had a great appointment! The whole team was all so welcoming and friendly. My hygienist Andrea did such an amazing job! She was very friendly, welcoming, and did a great job cleaning my teeth while also making sure I was never uncomfortable throughout the whole cleaning. I will definitely be coming back for my next 6 month cleaning with Andrea and Dr. Nielsen.

I had two separate experiences that made me decide to stop going there forever.
On a regular cleaning, the hygienist did a deeper clean on a tooth that was then infected. When I went back for the infection, Dr. Hutchison spent the entire time explaining to me how this is "not the office's fault but could happen to anyone". And kept insisting I should remove my wisdom tooth (not the infected tooth, and not causing me any issues). I explicitly state I am extreme pain, yet he proceeds to clean the infection, poking and prodding without any anesthetic so I'm completely teared up from the pain.

A year later I had tooth ache so went in to see the Dr. Nielsen. He recommended that I get a crown placed. Since I was about to travel out of town, they put in a rush order, but then had Dr. Hutchison place the crown (despite my specific ask to NOT work with him). The resulting crown was placed too high, and I had bite issues. To fix that, they ended up touching the opposite side and effectively ensured I could not eat, at all. After about 5-6 such visits, they 'compensate' me with a $5 Starbucks card and apologize. They claim the issue is not a bite issue but that it can be fixed with Invisalign. When I asked how can braces fix the issue, they say it can (no clear explanation, just blind faith). They refused to fix the high crown claiming that was not the issue at all, but that the $10000 braces will fix it. That's when I stopped going to them.

I found a much better dentist who took the trouble to understand the issue, did a bite test and found that the crown was actually quite high (what I kept saying all along). He tried a few other things to see if he could avoid putting in a new crown but eventually we had to replace the crown as it could not be shaved enough without damaging it. I had to end up paying the cost of a new crown but I can finally (almost a year later) eat without struggling to chew. And I worked with a dentist who tried to do what was best for me, not best for his pocket.

I would NEVER recommend Dentistry 801 Grand unless you simply want just teeth cleaning. The office staff is good, but that does not help if the dentists are not.

Everyone is extremely courteous and helpful! Very knowledgeable staff, great location. I couldn’t be happier! I have a wonderful check-up at every appointment.

I absolutely hate dentist and the thought of going to the dentist has always been nerve racking. However , Dr. Hutchison made me feel at ease and things were nowhere near as bad as I thought. I got a crown placed and it was a smooth process and looks great. Also, they are reasonably priced. Highly recommend!
