When it comes to choosing a dentist a lot of things should come into consideration and although the exact criteria may differ from person to person more than likely a few things are most important, one of which for me is value. I understand that location is also important as well as a clean, well organized, sanitary office of which Serene Oaks most definitely is, but so are a lot of other places which brings me to my motivation for writing this review. I chose Serene Oaks Dental after seeing an On Screen Advertisement for Dr. Horn at the White Bear Township theatre and after visiting the office and having my initial screening done and treatment plan laid out I was very happy. It is only after the work was completed and $1,000's of dollars were paid that I was let down by defective restorations and excuses that I was compelled to write this review. I have numerous crowns that were done by various dentists in offices ranging from the University of Minnesota Dental School to Serene Oaks Dental on a cost scale and the only one that I have had any issues with is the one completed by Serene Oaks Dental using Cerak Technology. I have crowns that have been in my mouth for 20 years with no problems but in less then 5 years the Cerak crown placed by Serene Oaks Dental has suffered a Buccal Fracture. The worst part about it is that I was assured by Dr. Horn that this type of crown was just as durable and long lasting as the typical lab created type. However, after calling the office to explain my unfortunate problem I was told that they only stand behind their restorations for "a year or two" and only if you remain a patient of theirs. It is with that response that my dismay and disgust has prompted me to write this so that no one else is duped by this fancy office into having expensive restorations done that are lacking in strength and will fail in a shorter period of time and will not be supported by the office that performed the work. I urge you to check around as a single crown cost is in excess of $1,200 and there are reputable dental offices that will stand behind their restorations for a period of 5 years regardless of where you choose to go for your dental health following the restoration!

May 18th, Bob had pain in his mouth and went to Dr. Gessica Horn. He received treatment and paid his bill as he left because they require payment at the time of service based on their estimate of what insurance will pay. On May 18th, the dentist office determined it would not be covered and the bill was paid by Bob in full; $268.00.

At the end of June when I received the credit card bill I realized I had not received and Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from Delta Dental so I called the dentist office. Emily, the person that is in charge of billing and insurance, (she is also related to Dr. Horn) told me it had not been submitted to insurance because it would not be a covered service. I told her that I wanted her to submit it to the insurance company to be certain.
July 9th I received the EOB from Delta Dental and guess what? $218.00 of the bill was not our responsibility, only $50.00 was our responsibility.

On Monday, July 11th, I called the Serene Oaks Dental in North Oaks, MN, and was told we had no credit on our account, When I asked for the date they had received that EOB, Natalie told me July 5th was the date they had received it. (They had the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th before the end of the week to issue a refund). Isn’t it interesting that they had received the notification but no credit was issued yet Bob had to pay the bill the day he had the service performed.

Of course both Drs. were on vacation (out of town according to Natalie) and Emily was also on vacation. Supposedly no one was in that could help me. (It would not be acceptable to them if we did pay our bill at the time of service). I explained that this was not acceptable and that they had now been sitting on our money since May 18th (money we really did not owe them) and that I needed an answer by the end of the day as to when I could pick up the check.

I was most upset about the fact that EMILY had made a decision NOT to submit the insurance but had collected money that was not owed them. They had no right to make that decision. They have a signed contract with Delta Dental to charge Delta insured patients as directed by Delta Dental and without submitting the insurance we had no way to know what that amount was.

Had I not had the experience with Insurance to know this, they would have charged us $218.00 we did not owe and they would have kept it.

I received a call from Dr. Gessica Horn and our family was “fired” as a patient. She says I was rude to Natalie….I guess requesting an expedient refund for money we never should have paid in the first place is reason to fire a patient and be considered rude. (Mind you Dr. Horn was not in the office nor was she part of the conversation but formed judgement without knowledge. When she called me she said she did not know the circumstances surrounding the insurance issue, yet still was comfortable in forming judgement.) We then received a Certified Letter a few days latter from her office firing our family as patients.

LESSON: Do not ask for a refund that is rightfully yours in as an expedient manner as they want payment if you want to remain a patient.

Now, on a side note; we have had overpayments in the past due to them collecting too much at the time the service was rendered and I have had to call and request a check each and every time — EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ASKED THEM THAT ANYTIME WE HAVE A CREDIT TO AUTOMATICALLY ISSUE A CHECK BACK TO US. Nope, they have never issued a refund without me calling and requesting it — they just keep the money but boy, you had better pay when you have a service performed. So, there is a pattern of them not willingly issuing a refund to patients with credits on their account, even when it has been requested that they do so each and every time. Maybe they should pay their patients interest on all the credits sitting on accounts?

I am sure the office will have an excuse for this - they always do when they are called on actions that don't fit their agenda.

You, as a consumer, can decide if this is the type of dentist you want deal with. I for one, do not!

My appointment at Serene Oaks was with Dr. Horn for Botox and dermal filler. As a new patient, I can't tell you what a great experience I had. The entire staff was top notch. Extremely friendly, thorough and competent. Dr. Horn listened to my concerns, offered her suggestions and clearly explained the procedures from start to finish. I was presented with a treatment plan and was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the fees were. The Botox injections were a breeze. I was worried about the dermal filler injections because everyone I've known to have the procedure described injections so painful it brought tears to their eyes. I'm happy to say, I will never worry again. Dr. Horn is a dentist. Not only is she extremely skilled at injections, she was able to numb the area from the inside of my mouth and even that injection was a breeze. I can honestly say, I didn't feel a thing! I thought it was a nice touch when Dr. Horn called later to check on me and ask if I had any questions or concerns.

My visit was six days ago. The results? Perfect! Dermal filler: I had no bruising from the injection and the annoying smile crease is gone. Botox: I wanted a little lift at the arch of my brows and that is exactly what I got. I love the results! I highly recommend Dr. Horn for Botox and/or dermal filler. You won't be disappointed.
