James River Family Dentistry

I can't even begin to describe how wonderful this place is. I always feel like I'm hanging out with friends who also happen to like cleaning my teeth. Every person in the office is beyond friendly, patient, and knowledgable. They remember tiny details about me that came up in conversations over a year ago. I'm so glad I found them. Even after moving farther away, I make the trip to continue coming to JRFD.

Then dentist called another dentist who also took me right in.
Every one was kind, friendly and efficient.

Friendly, professional and thorough dental office visit. I recently moved to VA. I chose this office after reading the positive reviews & was not disappointed. There's even an adorable dog behind the reception desk.

Wow! I’ve never felt so comfortable at a dentists office. I nearly fell asleep in the chair. And this was while my two year old was walking around their office, petting their dog, and chatting with the kind staff. Very happy I found this place!

I am terrified of the dentist and expressed this in my check up as well as during my exam. Unbeknownst to me, I have gum disease and required scaling. Kristen was so informative and helpful. She told me every bit of the process and made sure I was comfortable. Although scaling doesn’t require a needle, Kristen gave me the confidence to get through it. She was pleasant and very attentive.

I have been scared of going to the dentist since I can remember - I can honestly say I am much better. My family LOVES Dr. Guthrie, her staff and Buster. They are patient and calm and make everyone who walks through the door their top priority.

I’ve just recently switched over to james river family dentistry and From day one. Dr. Guthrie and her staff was knowledgeable kind, friendly and efficient. I’m proud to be apart of a caring dentistry family.

I went to this dentist because I live close by and hadn't gone to the dentist since I moved back to Richmond. The experience was comfortable enough and most of the employees were kind. The dentist was somewhat nice, but didn't explain almost anything she was doing while she was helping me.

At the end of my check up and cleaning, she told me they would need to schedule four appointments to get my teeth worked on and got up to leave. When I asked why I needed to come back, she told me I had cavities. I asked how many and she counted from the x-ray and then told me twenty. TWENTY CAVITIES. By the way, I have no oral pain at all at this point. I've never heard of such a thing. She said my teeth had heavy decay and I needed to come in to get it figured out, and then left. I was handed a bill for over $3,000 (after insurance) with no options or conversations about my financial capability to handle it.

To be fair, I thought, I get a good amount of cavities so maybe it was just a bad day for me. My wife went in the next day for a cleaning and check up. She hasn't had a cavity since grade school. Her experience was similar and they told her she had FOURTEEN CAVITIES. And they asked her to take extra x-rays, but not told why. Now we were suspicious. Again, no conversation about finances or options to get things done, just handed a bill of something like $2,500 and told to set up an appointment.

Well, my wife and I went to another dentist for a second opinion. I was told I had 5 cavities and her 4. I was pretty frustrated, but relieved that it wasn't as bad as we had been told. Moreover, this other dentist actually talked through what was happening and discussed how to handle the bill for our work, and was trying to come up with a plan that would help us.

I don't know if it's dishonesty, being over cautious, or what that's going on here. But I would not recommend this dentist. In the very odd case that I do happen to have twenty cavities, I still need a dentist who wants to work with me to figure things out, not expect me to dish out $3,000 without even talking about it.

Not coming back, I hope others do not have a similar experience.

New to Richmond and the ladies at JRF Dentistry are amazing! They were able to fit me in quickly as a new patient and my experience was nothing but positive! Highly recommend.

Friendly staff, dental hygienist did a great job. She did my cleaning and x-rays, very considerate and professional. Good bedside manner.
