I have seen Dr. Gill, the periodontist, two times now. She is very experienced, knowledgeable and friendly and overall I can't say enough good things about her!

HFD has improved greatly since my original review, a sign that they genuinely want to improve.

Since the original review was written, the Hawaii Family Dental manager in Kihei called me to understand the specific issues and this has almost completely turned me around (and they will get five *'s from me if they actually demonstrate that the issues raised are fixed).

The fact that they even care enough to call me is a statement by itself. After recanting various problems, the manager left me feeling that much of what I said was either unacceptable to who they want to be and how to service customers or that there is a need for improvements. The promise from upper management to try to make a course correction is what turned me around and I'm more than happy to give them the benefit of the doubt.

As mentioned, technology and doctors are fundamentally not the issue and that process, communication and coordination is where improvement is needed. Time will tell as reviews need to reflect what has actually happened, but I am hopeful and feel encouraged enough to hope for the best.

This review covers both Kahului and Kihei, after all they are one company.

Stay away from this very chaotic, very unorganized dental practice. Overall I would give them ZERO STARS if I could. Having said that, here is a more detailed rating so that you can see the good, bad and ugly:

5 *****'s: Dr.'s Barba (Kihei) and Hygienist Jennifer Tinker (Kahului) are both great!

5 *****'s: Great and latest technology used.

4 ****'s: Kahului personnel are very friendly and try to help despite the understaffing.

2 *'s: I mentioned they are one company. Problem is that they are very disconnected with each other.

1 *: BEWARE --- while they might take any dental insurance, different doctors are or are not signed up in all plans. This creates confusion, misunderstanding and ill will. Imagine you assume that if one location takes an insurance plan for in-network that all locations do --- NOT!

1*: Understaffed in all locations. This means getting information, making appointments and other servicing needs is hurting quite a bit.

1*: Patient history doesn't seem to be important, rather secondary. WHAT?

0 *'s: No one ever answers email. Don't frustrate yourself as it simply won't happen.

0 *'s: Calling is hazardous because they are so busy. After being on hold for 20 minutes in one call and then 30 minutes on another call, the system hung up. If you need something from them, you are better off going there.

0 *'s: Kihei is very UNFRIENDLY and they don't look anywhere as near busy as Kahului!

My experience with the dental staff was quite good, however dealing with the so called " conscierge" telephone staff was difficult and when I arrived I was told that I would not recieve the service that I scheduled. I then had to return for a second appointment. They left me on hold for 5 min or more and managed to cut me off twice.

I am very impressed with the service received. Both were extremely professional. They also showed me just how much they cared. Very easy and great communication throughout the procedure. I would highly recommend their service.

Denture was fitting tight which I wanted done but because the change my gums are hurting when eating and probably will be a while to get use to the new fit. Will see how long this will take. Overall satisfied with the service provided.

Cleaning was excellent. Hygiene was great at the office. Only 4 starts because I've called several times to try and make a new appointment for and need a referral because they are too backed up... still trying to get a hold of someone with the referral from Dr. Brian.

Well I was super nervous and my anxiety was kicking in I was thinking not to go but I was telling myself that Cristi you have to go oh you wanted to feel the pain but I did and when I went inside and then when they call my name I was super nervous and then the nurse was asking me if I was okay and I told her that I was okay and then she was telling me that she was going to do exam on my teeth and then they was polite and telling me that they going pull my teeth out and I was super nervous that I felt that pain when they numb my gums .. but anyways they was doing their job

I went in for a root canal today and Dr. Wiz did an amazing job! I was very anxious about my appointment but his patience, kindness, and professionalism helped to make me feel at ease. This is the 2nd root canal Dr Wiz did for me. He is the best and I highly recommend.

Had my teeth cleaned at my 6 month cleaning Selbi was my hygienist and she is great. I've belonged to Hoala Dental Program for about 19 years and can only say good things about them. I used to go to the Kihei location and recently changed to Wailuku, every one is great at either location.

I was happy with the same person that helped me a year ago!!!
He had all my needs in a file, and did a great job cleaning my teeth.
Looking forward to having me worked on in 6 months!

The hygienist, Ana, is so kind, thorough, and efficient at her job and my first meeting with Dr.. Hur was pleasant, informational, and put me at confident ease that he will do his utmost to give me the best quality dental care possible! Your receptionists are awesome--friendly, warm--truly an example of "Aloha"!! My compliments to all of you on being an excellent team!!
